Her section will return Thursday. | | What Washington is Talking About: Facebook, Google and Twitter are back on the Hill for day two of their hearing. And House Repubs' release of a tax reform plan has been pushed back to Thursday. What America is Talking About: Eight are dead and 12 injured in the most deadly terror attack in New York City since 9/11. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the suspect was "radicalized domestically" while law enforcement found a note near the truck used in the attack that claimed it was done for ISIS. Reminder: Rent is due. Poll of the Day: Americans plan to spend an average of $906 on Christmas gifts this year, according to a Gallup poll. That's up from $785 last year, and the highest that figure has been since 2007. So much winning. | | Credit: Gallup Posts From Russia-Connected Facebook Pages on the Senate Floor: In his opening remarks during yesterday's hearing with representatives from Facebook, Google and Twitter, Sen. Lindsey Graham called social media manipulation the "national security challenge of the 21st century." Several ads purchased by Russia-connected Facebook pages were displayed during the hearing. This top one, from the "Heart of Texas" page, claimed Hillary Clinton had a 69% disapproval rate among veterans and that if she became president, "the American army should be withdrawn from Hillary's control according to the amendments to the Constitution." The bottom photo from the page "Being Patriotic" included an invitation to a "Miners for Trump" event in Pennsylvania. | | Credit: C-SPAN 3 Obama Promotes Obamacare Enrollment Window: Enrollment for health care through the Affordable Care Act begins today and runs through December 15. The advertising budget to inform Americans about signing up was slashed by 90% by the Trump administration, and President Trump has inaccurately claimed that Obamacare is dead ("You shouldn't even mention it anymore. It's gone," he said last month). That's lead to widespread confusion, as the Washington Post pointed out. But former President Obama is promoting the enrollment period. He shot a video, posted today by the group Get America Covered. | | Credit: @GetUSCovered/Twitter Former Vice President Joe Biden also tweeted about the enrollment window today. | | Credit: @JoeBiden/Twitter Obama Stays Out of Politics During Foundation Summit: The former first couple kicked off their Obama Foundation Summit yesterday in Chicago and avoided commenting on politics or the news of the day. The ex-President called the summit a "hackathon" and made a surprise guest appearance while Michelle Obama and Prince Harry visited Hyde Park Academy, a school across from where the Obama Presidential Library will be built. Barack Obama will speak at the summit this evening. | | Credit: @KensingtonRoyal/Twitter Ken Burns Weighs in on the Civil War: Following White House chief of staff John Kelly's comments to Fox News Monday that the Civil War was due to a "lack of an ability to compromise," "The Civil War" miniseries director shared this on Twitter: | | Credit: @KenBurns/Twitter DJTJ Had a Day on Twitter: What's with Don Jr. and his tweets trying to make simplified political points with candy? Yesterday he tweeted a photo of his daughter Chloe with Halloween candy, writing that he was going to take half her candy and give it away "to teach her about socialism." First off, I hate people taking away kids' Halloween candy. I hate when Jimmy Kimmel encourages parents to punk their kids and film it every year, and this tweet is like that but trying to make a political point. Secondly, you used the wrong "too." Thirdly, Halloween candy is a literal handout, so please find a better analogy. | | Credit: @DonaldJTrumpJr/Twitter Don Jr. also faved a fake-news tweet claiming that people protesting right-wing media personality and "Pizzagate" conspiracy theory peddler Mike Cernovich in New York Monday held up a sign supporting pedophiles. Here's a screenshot of his fav of the tweet, from InfoWars' Paul Joseph Watson: | | Credit: @DonaldJTrumpJr/Twitter That banner, however, was planted by trolls, according to Gothamist reporter Jake Offenhartz, who took and tweeted the photo. He wrote that "a group of counter demonstrators, disguised as protesters, briefly unveiled" the banner. Video from the demonstration shows protesters shooing the people holding the sign away after they realize what's written on it, but the photo was tweeted as authentic by some right-wingers. And DJTJ's fav remains. "House of Cards" on Hold Following Kevin Spacey Allegations: Netflix and Media Rights Capital said in a joint statement Tuesday that production on the show has been halted "until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew." Production for season six began about two weeks ago in the Baltimore area. Rolling Stone's Photo Issue: The magazine is celebrating 50 years of original photography in its issue dated November 2. Among the highlighted photos are some COVER/LINE favorites: Kid Rock shot by Mark Seliger in 2000 ("Seliger wanted to play off Rock's white-trash-hell raiser persona" so he shot him carving strippers with a chainsaw in the Michigan woods); Barack Obama shot by Peter Yang in 2008 (the shoot came following Obama's defeat of Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary, it lasted 15 minutes, and they were playing Grateful Dead during it); and Britney Spears shot by David LaChapelle in 1999 (Britney was just 17 at the time and later said the photo was "a good representation of who I really am"). | | Credit: Rolling Stone magazine This Fake News Halloween Tee: Kate tweeted out this photo of a trick-or-treater who was wearing this Trump-themed Halloween shirt and it's gone mega viral, with more than 24,000 likes. (She gave him Skittles, btw.) Kate texted me this morning that she's now trending in Canada.
