It's all in the tradition. 9/19/19 Making Caribbean Roti in Miami Making good roti takes a lot of practice. Nafisa Ali knows. She's been making the flatbread at B & M Market in Miami for 29 years. Her ancestors brought the food from India to the Caribbean, filling it with local flavors like jerk chicken, goat, ackee and saltfish. She's been carrying on the tradition stateside. For Ali, you can't make good roti without a healthy dose of passion, love and excitement. Color Under the Lights People of color have faced limited representation on screen. And it's not just a lack of roles. Characters that play into stereotypes, actors with limited makeup options, and a lack of diversity behind the scenes all play into a larger, industry-wide problem. These factors have prevented people of color working in film from presenting their best face to the world, and have limited how authentic their characters look on screen. Actress, writer and director Gabourey Sidibe, showrunner Tanya Saracho and celebrity makeup artist Lola Okanlawon dig into the limitations on color under the lights—and how to create change moving forward.   This Great Big Story was made by Sephora.   Preserving the Ancient Art of Shadow Puppetry Fan Zheng'an is keeping the tradition of Mount Tai shadow puppetry alive in Tai'an, China. The art form was created more than 2,000 years ago. Zheng'an, who turns 76 this year, has been at it for 68 years, and he's basically a one-man puppeteering band. He operates anywhere from four to eight (and sometimes dozens!) of puppets when he performs. Zheng'an also does the voices, writes the stories and plays the music (with his feet, of course).
