But first, according to a White House official, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Trump and the first lady will watch today's solar eclipse from the Truman Balcony on the south side of the White House. What the White House Press Corps is Talking About: Trying to pump the White House communications office for info on the Afghanistan speech before Trump goes live from Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia. (Handy heads-up for those wishing to avoid/catch the motorcade.) Afghanistan, Cont'd: I honestly found this CNN video explainer of where we are with Afghanistan super-helpful and worth a click before it dominates the news cycle tonight. Trump is calling his announcement tonight a "path forward" for our future in Afghanistan. Trump Fam Basically Draining Secret Service Funds: So, the size and scope of the Trump family, with its various homes and living arrangements, has tapped out the Secret Service. That means that more than 1,000 agents have already hit the cap on what they can make, which is kind of a big deal. The Secret Service says it's protecting 42 people in Trump's administration -- 18 of them family! -- as opposed to 31 people in the Obama administration. Also, Trump's travel on the weekends to his various properties, as well as Melania Trump's decision to live with Barron Trump in New York City until June, have severely impacted available funds. Here's a fun fact: CNN reports that Trump's travel to his private club in Florida has cost more than an estimated $20 million in his first 80 days in office, putting the President on pace to surpass President Obama's eight years of spending on travel -- in only his first year in office. | | Ivanka Trump, Your Eclipse Headquarters: Seriously, she's very into this eclipse and has so far tweeted three times on the topic -- wait, make that four. That's more than she's tweeted about any one topic in quite some time (ahem, Charlottesville). Tbh tho, her graphic on how it works is actually interesting, because I will admit I was wondering. | | Credit: @ivankatrump/Twitter My next favorite, of course, is Wolf Blitzer wearing his eclipse glasses. But I'm Actually More Like Paris Hilton: This is so far my favorite tweet today about the eclipse. | | Credit: @ParisHilton/Twitter Charities Deserting Mar-a-Lago Watch Is Up To 14: This is important because places like Mar-a-Lago get a hefty amount of income from the fancy-pants soirees held inside gilded ballrooms. Since Trump's remarks last Tuesday about Charlottesville, 14 charities have pulled their previously scheduled high-dollar events and fundraisers from the property. Dress Like the First Lady: I'm mainly just happy that we can do this item again because it's been SO LONG since we've had a Melania Trump sighting. This was her last night, returning to the White House from Bedminster, New Jersey, where she's been enjoying a family vacation. She's wearing a sort of eclipse-ish Delpozo sundress from the design house's 2017 Resort Collection, which means it's already sold out. (Fashion is always a year ahead of time, so Resort 18 is already in stores -- it's tricky, bear with me.) When the dress retailed, it was $2,300. Here's her wearing it, and then what it was like when it was on sale, and also the dress as it was shown in the original collection by the designer: | | Credit: Nicholas Kamm/Getty Images; modaoperandi.com; courtesy Delpozo If you really have to get your hands on a Melania/Delpozo dress, the one she wore in Poland in July is still available for $2,650. Since Bryce Harper is Off the Field, Let's Look at His Wedding Pics: Shall we? The Nats player is injured, but his wedding album is up on The Knot. Harper married Kayla Varner in a "rustic, elegant" wedding in San Diego. Also, in case he forgot who he was marrying, he had the jacket of his groom suit lined with pictures of the bride, so that's handy. | | Credit: India Earl Photography for theknotnews.com | | What Washington is Talking About: The eclipse will be visible in Washington from 1:17 p.m. to 4:01 p.m., with maximum eclipse at 2:42 p.m., according to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, which is holding a viewing. Even though it'll only be a partial eclipse here, the moon will block up to 82% of the sun. Vice President Pence is holding a viewing from his Naval Observatory home. Kate and I are watching from the roof of CNN's DC bureau. What America is Talking About: More than 12 million people live in the path of the eclipse. Also, NASA has a livestream. I feel bad for that little sliver of Maine that's left out on this map :( | | Credit: New York Times Poll of the Day: A majority of registered voters in three states that helped Trump win the 2016 election now say they're "embarrassed" by his conduct in office, according to a NBC News-Marist poll. | | Credit: NBC News Why Bannon Didn't Like Javanka: Per the New York Times, the now-former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon "made little secret of the fact that he believed 'Javanka,' as he referred to the couple behind their backs, had naïve political instincts and were going to alienate Mr. Trump's core coalition of white working-class voters." When John Kelly was named chief of staff, Bannon told multiple people, "Those days are over when Ivanka can run in and lay her head on the desk and cry." Ideological Members of Congress Have More "Friends": A Pew study released today found that conservative and liberal members of Congress have more Facebook followers than moderates do. The most conservative and liberal members had a median of 14,361 followers, compared to a median of 9,017 for moderates. | | Credit: Pew Man Gets Mistaken for Nazi Because of His Haircut: A 26-year-old man was stabbed last week, and he believes it was because of his haircut. Joshua Witt said he pulled into a Steak 'n Shake in Sheridan, Colorado, and exited his car when a man approached him. "All I hear is, 'Are you one of them neo-Nazis?' as this dude is swinging a knife up over my car door at me," he told the New York Post. | | Credit: Joshua Witt/Facebook Side note: I got my hair cut last weekend and it was buzzed a little closer on the side than I usually get, so when I went to the protests outside of the White House after the Charlottesville attack, I wore a baseball cap just to be safe. We really need to take our haircuts back from the Nazis instead of letting them dictate what is and isn't fascist. Same for Pepe. Don't let the Nazi take our haircuts and memes! When Pro Football Players Do Political Cartoons: Green Bay Packers tight end Martellus Bennett may have a second career as a political cartoonist when he eventually hangs up his cleats. "Here's my first political cartoon," he wrote in the caption of this Instagram post he dedicated to his brother Michael Bennett, who plays for Seattle. "As I've been saying it seems as if 'you can use the platform provided to promote products but not to promote change to the products of your environment.'" | | Credit: @martellusb/Instagram Britney Slams Media, Sings a Bonnie Raitt Cover: You may remember earlier this year that in an interview with an Israeli television station, Britney Spears denied accusations of lip syncing. "It really pisses me off," she said. Well, she's not done proving to all the haters she can really sing. At Saturday's "Piece of Me" show in Las Vegas, Britney sang a live cover of Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About," and prefaced it by alluding to the news and attacking the media: "I've been doing a lot of thinking lately, right? This morning I woke up, looked at the news, there's a lot of things going on in the world and stuff. But basically, I looked and I was like, the press and the media my whole life, you know, it's really crazy because one minute they tear you down, and that's really horrible, and the next minute you're on top of the world, but I've never really spoke about it, you know? I'm a Southern girl, I'm from Louisiana. I'm from the South, and I like to keep it real, so I just want to make sure I keep having you motherf**kers something to talk about." Her connecting current events with how the media covers her made me wonder: What does she think of press coverage of Trump??? Watch the whole thing here. GQ: Get Ready for President Mike Pence: The September issue is out, and it includes this amazing Founding Father-Mike Pence mash-up as art for Jason Zengerle's story about the possibility Veep becomes 46. Also, Robert Pattinson is the cover boy, and it reminds me of Trump's 2012 Twitter obsession with him. | | Credit: @GQMagazine/Twitter/Pence Face: Brendon Thorne/Getty Images/Background: Graphicaatis/Getty Images Justice For Tiffany: Today is orientation day at Georgetown Law, where Tiffany Trump is a first-year student. She's been silent on social media, but per the school, students today will have registration and a solar eclipse viewing in the Library Quad. Tomorrow there's a spin class in the Sport & Fitness Center, with more welcome events. If you have any Tiff sightings, you know where to send them: coverlinehunter@cnn.com. Taylor Swift Returns To Social Media: After deleting all her social media posts last week, T Swift is back, posting this video online. It looks like ... a snake? For the unfamiliar, the snake has come to be used as a symbol to characterize Taylor as deceptive. 🐍🐍🐍 | | | | | |
