Singing the Tokyo Blues
Jerome "Jero" White never imagined that he'd grow up to be a star in the Japanese music scene. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was first introduced to enka music by his grandmother, a native of Yokohama, Japan. Influenced by his grandmother, Jerome began singing the "Japanese blues" at the age of five, and he made the decision to move to Japan to pursue a career in music.
Kenya's Eastern Bongos Are Dwindling in the Wild
This chestnut-and-white-striped antelope is an eastern bongo. Fairly large in size, eastern bongos can weigh between 500 and 900 pounds with horns as long as 40 inches in length. Due to hunting and destruction of their natural habitats, they are well below the critically endangered threshold, with only around 100 bongos left in the wild.
Acing Senior Year at India's School for Grandmothers
In Phangane, India, there's a school where students aren't quite what you'd expect: most are grandmothers. At Aajibaichi Shala, older women whose educational opportunities were limited earlier in life due to their gender are learning to read and write their names. For the students, it's a critical point of pride; for everyone, it's proof that you're never too old to learn.
