In the village of Inakadate, Japan, elaborate expanses of "rice paddy art" grace the surrounding landscape. Looking for a way to boost tourism and contribute to the village's rich culture, town officials turned to what they knew best—growing rice. Using dozens of varieties of rice as their color palette, locals gather to plant each new masterpiece, taking inspiration from local geography and Japanese folklore.
A Legal High Speed Chase
Every Wednesday at the Sonoma Raceway in California, high school students line up on the drag strip and go one on one … with a police car. It's all a part of a program hoping to put a positive 'spin' on law enforcement, providing teens with a safe space to hit the accelerator. Now in its 23rd year, "Top the Cops" was first founded by Kevin McKinnie, a retired police officer looking for a way to help curb illegal drag racing.
Pisco: The Spirit of Peru
Pisco is more than just Peru's drink of choice—it's a source of national pride. For those who haven't tried it, this distilled, clear spirit is made from grapes grown in the country's Ica Region. Peruvians generally drink pisco either straight-up, or mixed—most commonly in the citrus-tinged cocktail, pisco sour. For the best of both worlds, there's master distiller Jose "Pepe" Moquillaza and mixologist Roberto Melendez (whose pisco sour is widely considered the world's best). These two "liquid storytellers" proudly represent the past, present and future of pisco, the spirit of Peru.
