This weekend Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire, visited the Vatican and were photographed with Pope Francis. I only post this because people on the interwebs freaked about Francis' dour-looking face when he posed with Trump and first lady Melania Trump, saying his frown indicated his displeasure with our President. So, either he's also not a fan of Trudeau? Or leaders in general? Or having his picture taken for photo ops? | | Credit: @lpolgreen/Twitter Our Daily Melania: Listen, here's the deal: Melania Trump nailed the trip. Couldn't have gone better. How do I know this? Because for the most part, people didn't give a damn that the first lady wore a coat that costs $51,500. Like, couldn't have cared less. Even the Washington Post's Robin Givhan, who from her Twitter feed does not appear to be a huge Trump fan, leapt to Melania's defense, calling outrage over the price tag of the Dolce & Gabbana floral jacket, "misguided cries." The thing might as well have been made out of Teflon instead of giant flower embellishments. My theory: The first lady dressed so well, behaved so diplomatically, set such an appropriate tone for her first foreign trip in her new role, that by the end, when she wore the jacket on the final leg in Sicily, no one wanted to fault her for it. I can't tell you how many people responded to me posting my story about the jacket on Twitter with, "So? Your point?" or "She's married to a billionaire, she can afford it." Bottom line, we learned a lot of stuff about the first lady during this trip, mostly because it was the most we've seen of her since her husband took office, but also because it was essentially a glimpse into her personality, her faith, her approach to her new role and her marriage. I feel like this picture -- white suit, pink striped shoes, sea of black -- best expresses what I'm saying about how Melania stood out on this trip: | | Credit: Heidi Levine/Getty Images Let's Look Back, Shall We?: From left below, here are my top five style looks from the first lady on her trip abroad. First, the white Dolce & Gabbana suit, with the black blouse, which was appropriate and tailored and I feel like sent a message about a powerful woman in traditional menswear. Second, the lace Dolce & Gabbana dress and overcoat she wore to meet the Pope: perfection. Third, the checkered pattern Michael Kors belted coat dress, a silhouette that's becoming her signature but with a rare pattern -- she usually sticks with solids -- and matching shoes. Fourth, the insane, tan leather skirt suit, with the perfect slit, designed by Belgian house Maison Ullens, in a nod to the host country. I appreciate this look because it's difficult to cut a leather suit and have it look as refined as this one does. And, finally, what can I say? I'm a sucker for sparkles. The silver, custom Dolce & Gabbana, because the full sleeve, the high neck and the matching shoes. Sigh. | | Credit, from left: Mandel Ngan/Getty Images; the Vatican press office; Photonews/Getty Images; Eric Lalmand/Getty Images; Tiziana Fabi/Getty Images | | What Washington Is Talking About: Bryce Harper's brawl with Giants reliever Hunter Strickland after Strickland hit Harper in the hip with a 98-mph fastball at Monday's game. ESPN has video of the whole interaction from multiple angles here. What America Is Talking About: Tiger Woods, who was arrested Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence. He said in a statement he had an "unexpected reaction to prescribed medications." What America Isn't Talking About: The movies they saw this weekend. Domestic Memorial Day box-office revenue was the lowest it's been in 18 years. And the movie from our possible next president, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, "Baywatch," came in third, behind the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" and the "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel. The star responded to negative reviews of the film in the most populist way possible, saying the elite critic establishment is out of touch with his fans: | | Credit: @TheRock/Twitter Russians Talked About Having Dirt on Trump: Sources tell CNN that according to conversations between Russian officials intercepted by US intelligence during the campaign, they talked about "having potential 'derogatory' information about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump" and members of his campaign. A source said the information was "financial in nature" and they believed it could be used to influence a future Trump administration. A source warned Russia could also be either exaggerating or making up their allegations as part of larger efforts to spread disinformation. The White House in a statement denied the story. Due Today: Today's the deadline for former national security adviser Michael Flynn to respond to two Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenas. Earlier this month, the committee issued a subpoena for documents relating to his communications with Russia. "House of Cards" Season 5 Is Finally Here: I watched the first episode this morning before coming in for work. It has it all: hacking, proposed travel bans, congressional investigations looking into possible wrongdoing of the administration and the president's critics accusing him of trying to distract from it all. And to promote the new season, the show's official Twitter account posted this video of a vandalized Season 5 poster with a spray-painted, upside-down American flag.
