Let's Try This Again?: Repubs' latest Obamacare repeal bill doesn't have the votes either

What the White House is Talking About:
Its Hail Mary attempt to pass President Trump's revised healthcare bill.

What the White House Press Corps is Talking About:
Trump's scheduled afternoon call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, continuing his streak of keeping strongmen in the spotlight.

"A Good Shutdown":
The President's basically telling the government to go to its room in this tweet from today.

White House Kills Let Girls Learn. Or Does It?
Yesterday it seemed pretty clear the Trump administration had pulled the plug on Let Girls Learn, one of the cornerstones of Michelle Obama's platform as first lady and a key component of her legacy. However, when CNN broke the story, the White House said, nuh-uh, no we didn't

Ivanka Trump's Book is Out Today:
"Women Who Work: Rewriting the Rules for Success," by the first daughter, is now available. Ivanka has already said she won't collect any profits, instead donating them to the National Urban League and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, via her newly established Ivanka M. Trump Charitable Fund, set up expressly for that purpose.

The book release comes on the heels of her participation yesterday on a small business panel, where she basically got very real about balancing motherhood and work (spoiler: she doesn't), and feeling guilty about not spending enough time with her kids.

A lot of Trump family members tweeted support of the book's debut, and I'm guessing her father will do the same before the day is out. Eric Trump even includes a link to buy it on Amazon. Here's the cover; note she's wearing the green contacts. Also, the chapter divider pages have inspirational quotes. And the back pic is a candid of Ivanka and her three kids.

Breaking: Ivanka Calls Trump "Dad":
And other interesting tidbits in this New York Times piece on Ivanka out today, which tries to outline her objectives in the West Wing.

What also struck me was this retelling of how Ivanka reacted to the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape.

Met Gala Carpet Was Meh:
The way I felt about the fashions at last night's Met Gala is best described by the look on Huma Abedin's face as she walked the red carpet.

In other words, it was pretty boring. I mean, the theme was avant garde, and a lot of the celebrities looked like they were going to an Upper East Side garden party or something.

Here are my best-dressed:

Left to right: Liu Wen in Off-White, with that super-cool denim skirt; Stella Maxwell in custom H&M; Cara Delevingne in a seriously dope Chanel Haute Couture suit; Hailey Baldwin in a frothy custom Carolina Herrera; and Rihanna, killing the game in runway Comme Des Garçons.

Our Daily Melania/Met Gala Fun Fact:
Impress your friends by knowing that Donald Trump proposed to Melania at the 2004 Met Gala, giving her a $2 million, 12-carat, emerald-cut ring. Later that night, this awkward pic happened.

What Washington is Talking About:
Airlines executives, including United CEO Oscar Munoz, are testifying before the House Transportation Committee today on customer service and protections.

What America is Talking About:
Jimmy Kimmel's emotional story about his son undergoing open-heart surgery when he was just three days old (he's doing great now, Kimmel said) and his plea for affordable healthcare. "No parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child's life," he said. "It just shouldn't happen, not here." Hillary Clinton tweeted Kimmel's video this morning, saying it reminds "us what's at stake w/healthcare."

What Hollywood is Talking About:
While Washington's been working on a spending bill to keep the government open, Hollywood's been working to avoid its own shutdown. Early this morning, the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reached a deal, avoiding a writers' strike.

Let's Try This Again?:
Republicans' latest attempt to replace Obamacare isn't looking any more promising than the last go-round. Speaker Ryan told House Republicans today he'll put a bill up for a vote when they're confident they have the votes it'll pass. He hasn't put a bill up for a vote, so...

CNN's latest whip count has 21 Repubs who say they'll vote no against the bill. The GOP can only afford to lose 22 total votes right now.

BYU and Diversity in Media:
My phone blew up after Fox News' Tucker Carlson mentioned my alma mater during his show last night. At the end of a segment on President Trump and the media, Carlson asked his guests if "80% of the reporters working in the briefing room were graduates of BYU, do you ... think the coverage would change in any way?"

On one hand, the job of journalists regardless of where they went to school is the same: to report the news, to find the truth and to ask tough questions. On the other hand, I do think reporters' backgrounds can enrich and inform their reporting. I'm personally grateful I've lived in both conservative and liberal communities and I feel like I understand people of a wide variety of political persuasions because of those experiences.

When we talk about diversity in media, it's usually about race and gender, because newsrooms tend to be white and male. According to the 2016 Diversity Survey from the American Society of News Editors, minorities make up 17% of employees at newspapers and 23% at online-only news sites, and women make up 38% of employees at newspapers and nearly 50% of online news sites.

BYU graduates wouldn't necessarily make newsrooms more racially diverse or female — according to school data, it's 83% white and 53% male — but missing from the discussion of newsroom diversity are things like faith (63% of BYU students have served Mormon missions), geography (62% come from the Western states of Utah, California, Idaho, Arizona, and Texas), and politics (BYU doesn't have political data on their students, but Mormons are the most conservative religious group in the US).

A good reporter can capture a story and its nuance regardless of his or her background, but I do think our media benefits from diversity of all kinds, including race, gender, age, geography, faith, sexual orientation, family experience, economic background and education.

The "It's Gonna Be Me" Bump:
Justin Timberlake marked May 1 yesterday with a tweet:

For those who are unfamiliar, it's a reference to a meme popular at the end of April/beginning of May about how in NSYNC's No. 1 song "It's Gonna Be Me," Justin sings the word "me" like "May." Anyways, it's now become an annual tradition for Britney Spears' ex-boyfriend to joke about it. In 2014, President Obama even got in on it.

According to data provided to Forbes by YouTube, the meme also results in a huge boost in views of the video each year.

Now please excuse me while I go listen to "It's Gonna Be Me" on one of its 364 off days.
