Testing the Trump-China bromance; Americans cut spending; Illinois budget crisis hits teens with mental illness

What's new... what's next

1. Trump and China could still fall out over trade

President Trump's bromance with China's Xi Jinping could soon run into trouble over trade. Trump ripped China's trade practices during the campaign, but has expressed enthusiasm about the leaders' relationship since taking office. That gig may be up shortly. Sunday is the deadline set by Xi and Trump to make headway on talks. But the trade deficit is only growing, and tension over North Korea isn't helping matters.

2. Americans are cutting back on spending

American consumers tightened their purse strings in June. Retail sales dropped for the second straight month and the third time this year. That poses a challenge to U.S. growth, because consumer spending makes up two-thirds of all U.S. economic activity. President Trump wants to get growth up to 3% during his presidency. Weak retail sales in the first half of the year all but solidify the fact that his goal won't be reached this year. Growth is expected to be around 2% for 2017.

3. Police pull Fords over carbon monoxide fears

Some police say their Ford Motor SUV police cars are leaking exhaust fumes into their vehicles, causing officers to suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning. Federal safety officials are looking into the allegations surrounding the Ford Police Interceptor, a version of the Ford Explorer modified for police use (though they have yet to open a formal investigation).

4. Illinois budget crisis threatens troubled teens

Ricky has a history of pulling knives, starting fires and hearing voices. The Illinois teen recently tried to take his own life. Now, the Illinois budget crisis is threatening the critical care Ricky receives. Illinois has failed to pay the bills at the highly-specialized facility where Ricky is being treated. The facility has threatened to prematurely discharge patients in early August if they're not paid soon. "They're getting marginalized by the very system that's supposed to be helping them," Ricky's father said.

6. What's next:

Checking in on China: After freaking investors out in 2015, China's economy has stabilized in recent quarters. New GDP figures, due out late Sunday night New York time, are expected to show China's growth slowed just gradually during the second quarter.

Netflix and…the world's largest asset manager: On the heels of "meh" numbers from the big banks on Friday, earnings season rolls on with BlackRock reporting results before Monday's opening bell. Keep an eye out for words of wisdom on the market from Larry Fink, BlackRock's billionaire CEO. Netflix will be in the spotlight in the afternoon. Wall Street has set the bar high, with Netflix stock having surged more than 60% over the past year.
