Few gifts are so thoughtful they change the course of human history. Around 1672, a Flemish scientist named Ferdinand Verbiest designed a toy steam-propelled trolley for his friend and mentee, the Kangxi Emperor. Quite the gesture toward the man who nearly had Verbiest executed! It's unclear if the little automobile ever made it off the blueprints, but it put humankind on the road to four wheels. This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis. |
