It's happening! Here's your Election Day cheat sheet

It's finally here: Voters are heading to the polls, campaigns are scrambling in war rooms and everyone is waiting for those polls to close.

This is the first major electoral test for President Donald Trump since taking office. After a polarizing first two years, will his midterm campaign blitz that increasingly fanned concerns about illegal immigration pay off, closing the enthusiasm gap between his base and the Democratic voters who turn out to send him a message?

Here's what we know about how things will play out tonight

๐Ÿ•• 6 p.m. ET: The first polls close

These early closures are in most of Indiana and Kentucky. What to watch: Kentucky's 6th District -- the contest between Democrat Amy McGrath and GOP Rep. Andy Barr is considered an early bellwether

๐Ÿ•—8 p.m. ET: The decisive hour

Polls close in two of the key states that could determine control of the Senate: Tennessee and Missouri.

It'll also be hugely important in showing what happens with the House. Keep an eye out for returns from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, note CNN's Eric Bradner and Dan Merica.

๐Ÿ•™10 p.m. ET and beyond: Time to put on the coffee

At this point, you'll have polls closing in Iowa, Nevada and Washington state, but the big prize comes last: California. The Golden State is notoriously slow at counting votes, so if control of the House comes down to outcomes in any of the state's contentious House races, be prepared to wait days or even weeks ... so it's OK to go to bed.

And in the meantime, follow CNN's online coverage of all things midterms (including exit polls) on our results page.

GETTING OUT THE VOTE ✔️

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence both voted absentee in their respective states weeks before Election Day, according to CNN's Kevin Liptak and Liz Landers.

The President and vice president join the more than 33 million Americans who voted early this cycle, either by mail or in person.
