In Obihiro, on the northernmost Japanese island of Hokkaido, racehorses aren't the lithe, lean thoroughbreds you've seen run the Kentucky Derby. Instead, they're lumbering draft horses who pull one-ton sleds down hilly tracks. The sport is called Ban'ei, and it can only be found here.
Dominican Republic's Tradition of Mask Making
For one month every year, Carnival floods the streets of the Dominican Republic with wild colors, bold costumes and incredibly intricate masks. In Santiago, which hosts one of the island's most colorful parties, Humberto Lopez is *the* mask maker to go to. He started crafting at the age of 12, became a professional at 16 and will forever be proud to create masks that celebrate Dominican culture.
For most of his life, artist Myneandyours lived and worked in his native London. But after 28 years there, he felt the pull to help create a culture, rather than simply be a part of one already well established. So, Myneandyours took his creative talents to Dubai. For the past four years, he's been on a mission to transform the city's streets by creating large-scale, immersive art in some of the most unlikely spaces.
The best way to take in the spectacular Dubai landscape is from 10,000 feet in the air—at least, according to skydiver Jarrett Martin. With over 1,000 jumps in the city under his belt, he should know. After an accident left him without use of his legs, Jarrett didn't let his love of skydiving wane. Thanks to adaptations made to his landing style and modified equipment, Jarrett is still able to fly high and free.
