Today, CNN will air Fareed's most recent special report, Scheme and Scandal: Inside the College Admissions Crisis.

The American dream became a criminal conspiracy in the bribery scandal that made national headlines, but Fareed goes beyond it to survey the landscape of America's college-admissions system—including the myriad ways in which it can advantage the wealthy, from high-priced counseling services to legacy admissions to the side door of athletics.

Fareed looks at the history of legacy admissions and the SAT (both born at Harvard, the former as a way to keep Jewish applicants out), private counseling and test-prep packages that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and one school that does things differently: Kentucky's Berea College, where education is free and only low-income students are admitted.

Interviewed in the special are journalist and author Malcolm Gladwell; Daniel Golden, author of The Price of Admission; Allen Koh, CEO of Cardinal Education; Nicholas Lemann, former Columbia Journalism dean and author of The Big Test; and Daniel Markovits, author of The Meritocracy Trap.
