Police say the woman who was shot was one of the subjects of the investigation but the operation wasn't connected to the earlier arrest of a man near Parliament. He was held over the possession of an offensive weapon and preparing for acts of terrorism. A witness described seeing two knives on the ground, one a large bread knife.
Known as Marine A during his trial, Sergeant Alexander Blackman was convicted in 2013 of murdering a wounded Taliban fighter. But his conviction for the 2011 shooting was downgraded in March to manslaughter. Now Sgt Blackman is free, having been released from Erlestoke Prison, near Devizes, Wiltshire.

Meanwhile, the Times leads on the NSPCC's call for social media firms to be fined if they don't shield children from pornography and bullying. And the Financial Times reports that European leaders are "preparing to recognise the potential for a united Ireland within the EU".
