Reactions flowed in swiftly after President Trump posted a pair of hateful and sexist tweets about MSNBC's “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski while the pair was on the air Thursday.
MSNBC responded with this statement: "It's a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job."
Republican lawmakers were caught off guard, and several said the remarks were unbecoming of the office. House Speaker Paul Ryan said the crude messages are inappropriate and do nothing to help fix the tone of debate in Washington.
First lady Melania Trump stood by the President, and her communications director released the following statement: "As the First Lady has stated publicly in the past, when her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder."
CNN’s Chris CIllizza says Trump has crossed a line that would require an apology and possibly result in a firing for other high-profile men. He says the President’s “problem is that he is incapable of differentiating between disagreements about policy or even tone and genuine attacks on him personally.”
