This evening, the President and first lady Melania Trump host the annual congressional picnic on the South Lawn. What the White House Press Corps is Talking About: Health care bill: What's in it / Would Trump approve it? These are the storylines. Also, Trump's remarks about the bill and what it means for passage. At a quick photo op at the tech meeting, he said: "It's going to be very good. A little negotiation, but it's going to be very good." Trump Wants Rich People in His Cabinet to Steer Economy: One interesting highlight from Trump's rally last night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was when he said that although he digs both rich people and poor people, he only wants the rich ones working on the economy for his Cabinet. The bulk of the speech, which lasted more than an hour, was classic Trump: relaxed, boisterous, braggadocios and focused on the win, win, win. But First, Tweets: This morning saw more tweets from POTUS on the topic of the Russia investigation. "It's all a big Dem HOAX!" is a preferred outtake, as is, "Please let Cryin' Chuck stay!" #instantclassics | | Meanwhile, in a CNN Scoop: We had the exclusive story about intelligence chiefs revealing to Robert Mueller's investigators that Trump suggested they refute the idea that there was collusion between his campaign and the Russians. Meanwhile, Part Two, Here's the New Cover of Time: It's Mueller, "The Lie Detector." Appears he posed for this portrait? David Von Drehle writes the cover story. | | Image credit: @TIME/Twitter Our Daily Melania: In what I'm pretty sure is a sign of the apocalypse, plastic surgeons are now offering a Melania Makeover, so women who want to look like the first lady can. "I want to feel like the first lady I know I am inside," says Claudia Sierra, a patient of a Houston MD who two days ago was scheduled to have eight procedures to get her Melania look. The whole thing will be featured on an upcoming episode of "Inside Edition"; you know I'll keep you posted. Bad News Babes Game Has Bad-Ass First Pitch: At last night's Congressional Women's Softball Game, the media team, Bad News Babes, beat the lawmakers 2 to 1 in a nail-biter. But the best part was the first pitch, which was thrown out by Crystal Griner, the hero Capitol Police officer shot last week while stopping a shooting at a GOP baseball practice. Proceeds from the game went to the Young Survival Coalition, which assists young women diagnosed with breast cancer. | | Image credit: Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call Group for Getty Images | | SPACE GEEKS, IT'S HAPPENING: A solar eclipse is coming, which means it's time to book your travel plans. On August 21, the sun will completely disappear behind the moon, the first total eclipse since 1979 -- which, I'm guessing, was before a lot of you were born. Here are some cool suggestions of places to go to watch the phenomenon (I'm partial to the one in the Bahamas). Not Surprisingly, I Went to the Most Nerd College in America: Wanted to brag on my alma mater, St. John's College, for a second. This great new piece in Quartz talks about its unique program of study and why its graduates are basically trained for everything and nothing at the same time. Anyway, I went there and loved it, if that tells you anything. Hi, I'm Kate. | | What Washington is Talking About: Senate Republicans released their version of the Obamacare replacement bill this morning. Initial reaction on Capitol Hill is basically, "Hold on, let me read the thing." (It was written in secrecy -- even many Republicans didn't know the details -- and it's 142 pages long). Paul Ryan said it seems to track with the House version of the bill. Nancy Pelosi called it a "harmful bill without a heart" and a "tax bill disguised as a health care bill." And Chuck Schumer said it "will result in higher costs, less care." What America is Talking About: Kim Kardashian announced she's and husband Kanye West are hiring a surrogate to have their third child. Poll of the Day: Most losing presidential candidates see a bump in their approval rating after the campaign ends. John McCain saw a huge jump, from 50% to 64%, and Mitt Romney went from 46% to 50%. but Hillary Clinton's favorability is stagnant, sliding from 43% in Gallup's final pre-election poll to 42% today. | | Trump's First 2020 Fund-raiser: It'll be next Wednesday at his Washington hotel. Obama's lead ethics attorney, Norman Eisen, told the AP that holding the event there is evidence Trump is "becoming more and more brazen in his efforts to monetize the presidency." The Popularity of Rap and How Politicians Talk: I wrote yesterday about how Georgia's Democratic House candidate, 30-year-old Jon Ossoff, sounded like he was doing an Obama impression in his concession speech, and I wasn't the only one. I spoke with John McWhorter, an associate professor at Columbia University and author of the book "Talking Back, Talking Black," who said it's evidence of "the browning of America." "There's now a whole generation who've grown up with rap," he said, and black voices are often used in commercials. "Black voices sell products." The Obama cadence, inspired by black preachers, is something he thinks we'll hear more. "I suspect we'll hear more young politicians speak that way," he said. You can read my full story here. Cher Sours on Pelosi: Democrats' special election losses have Cher questioning Nancy Pelosi's leadership role. "THERES NO MEDAL FOR 2nd PLACE," she tweeted Wednesday. "I ADMIRE & RESPECT NANCY PELOSI, BUT IN 'EVERY' RACE, GOP RUNS AGAINST HER." | | Credit: @cher/Twitter And Cher's not the only one. Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-New York, said this morning on CNN's "New Day," "If you were talking about any sports team that was losing time and time again, changes would be made, right?" Scaring Mountain Lions Away with Glenn Beck: Scientists from the University of California at Santa Cruz are studying fear in mountain lions by playing audio of political talk show hosts like Beck, Rachel Maddow and Rush Limbaugh around the animals' "kill sites," where they store their prey. And more than 80% fled immediately after hearing the voices, according to the Washington Post. They're "nonpartisan in their hatred of American politics," UCSC ecologist Justine Smith joked. The lions' reaction was the same regardless of whether the voice was male, female, conservative or liberal. Street Art Sighting: Ben's Chili Bowl celebrated its new mural of 16 likenesses yesterday. It includes black Washingtonian entertainers like Taraji P. Henson, Dave Chappelle and Wale, and at the corner, Prince and the Obamas. Not included on the new mural is Bill Cosby, who once occupied the corner space on the mural with Barack Obama. | | Credit: @MurielBowser/Twitter Here's the corner of the old mural: | | Credit: Saul Loeb/AFP/Getty Images And earlier this year, it featured the Washington Wizards' John Wall and Bradley Beal. | | Credit: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images Send me your pics of political street art to coverlinehunter@cnn.com, tweet me @hunterschwarz or tag @cnncoverline on Instagram. | | | | | |
