What the White House Press Corps is Talking About: The press briefing with Sean Spicer is back on-camera today, at 2 p.m., co-starring Energy Secretary Rick Perry. Syria Statement: Last night's ominous statement from the White House on "potential preparations for another chemical weapons attack in Syria" and a "heavy price" to be paid by the Syrian regime if one is carried out -- had some people scratching their heads. It was clearly a red-line-drawing situation from Trump, but the details were vague. | | Modi Hugs: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a hugger, that much is known. The hug he gave Trump after their joint statement in the Rose Garden yesterday made me weirdly happy. | | Credit: Nicholas Kamm/Getty Images Modi also hugged him goodbye when he left the White House following dinner. | | Credit: Win McNamee/Getty Images As a non-hugger, I appreciate the President's facial expressions in both of these shots. Fun fact: Modi is apparently also a child-ear-tugger, as demonstrated by these images from Indian activist Iyad el-Baghdadi's twitter feed. | | Credit: @eyadelbaghdadi/Twitter Joe Biden Looks Good in Lifeguard Chair: This image made the social media rounds yesterday, but the story behind why Joe Biden was sitting in the chair and why this Delaware pool was named in his honor is actually pretty cool. I suggest reading. | | Credit: @tfurlong/Twitter Ivanka Adds Human Trafficking Fight to Her Plate: This morning at the State Department, Ivanka Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced the release of the 2017 Trafficking in Persons report. The report outlines where the world stands on the issue of human trafficking. Ivanka, in her remarks to the invited guests, said that as a mother she doesn't view stopping human trafficking as just a policy priority, it is also, for her, a "clarion call to defend the vulnerable and exploited." By my count, in the past seven days, Ivanka has had meetings about or been involved with the following issues: human trafficking, global entrepreneurship, childcare tax credits, working families initiatives, and technology innovation. Dress Like the First Lady: Yesterday, Melania Trump went with a patterned dress, which is unusual for her. The pattern felt very Indian, but the design house, Emilio Pucci, is actually Italian. Anyway, you can find it here for $2,160. | | Credit: Mark Wilson/net-a-porter.com But Don't Do This With Your Watch: Sometimes you have to watch POTUS' fashion, too. Guys, why *does* he wear his watch band so tight? So, so, so tight? | | Credit: @JoeMande/Twitter ICONIC Cover: I'm old enough to remember 1991, when Demi Moore did this pose on the cover of Vanity Fair, but it still looks good on Serena Williams. She's striking on the cover of the August issue of the mag, and the pic was shot by Annie Leibovitz, who also did Moore's. | | Credit: Annie Leibovitz exclusively for @VanityFair/Twitter | | What Washington is Talking About: Vice President Pence is meeting with Senate Repubs today in support of their imperiled health care bill. He's at a lunch with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell this afternoon, and hosting a dinner tonight at the Naval Observatory with Sens. James Lankford, Mike Lee, Ben Sass, and Tom Cotton. What America is Talking About: The Oklahoma City Thunder's Russell Westbrook was named the NBA's 2016-2017 Most Valuable Player last night. Poll of the Day: Foreign countries' confidence that the US president will "do the right thing regarding world affairs" has tumbled since President Trump took office. Here's how opinion has changed with our North American neighbors and Western Europe: | | There are two countries where opinion has improved, however: Israel and Russia. | | Eric Trump's New Haircut: The first son debuted a new high-and-tight cut in a Fox News interview this weekend, which Esquire said "looks eerily similar to the preferred cut of famed white nationalist Richard Spencer." The Huffington Post did a whole article of essentially Twitter responses suggesting the cut is fascist to this tweet from our Andrew Kaczynski noting the new do. | | Credit: @KFILE/Twitter The thing is, though, this is just a popular haircut. We see it on athletes and musicians and movie stars. Below is Brad Pitt with a version of it in the 2014 film "Fury," that's about Americans who fight Nazis. But it's developed a reputation. Just a word of advice: If you work in politics and ask for the high-and-tight, be on the safe side and show your stylist examples of what you do and don't want it to look like. | | Credit: Columbia Pictures 🐸Pepe Watch🐸: Artist Matt Furie, the creator of Pepe, launched a Kickstarter Monday afternoon to take back his cartoon frog, which was co-opted as an alt-right symbol during the 2016 campaign. Furie "laid Pepe to rest" in May with a cartoon of him in a casket, but now he says he wants to "re-rebrand Pepe the frog as a symbol of love, peace, and acceptance." Furie's asking for $10,000 to make a zine to "tell the story of Pepe's resurrection." As of this morning, he has more than $3,000. The video for the campaign shows a crying Pepe smiling when a butterfly lands on him. Feels good, man. | | Credit: Save Pepe/Kickstarter Wrong Washington: The NFL Shop is selling a series of state pride novelty license plates that show team logos over the outline of the state they play in, and they put Washington state for the Washington Redskins. In their defense, the team doesn't even play in D.C., they play in Maryland. The plate is no longer for sale on the NFL Shop site. | | Credit: NFL Shop Street Art Sighting: Spotted flying above the skies of Charleston, West Virginia yesterday, a plane with a banner that read, "SEN. HELLER: KEEP YOUR WORD: VOTE NO ON TRUMPCARE." Except Sen. Dean Heller is actually from Nevada.
