On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN: First, Fareed gives his Take on President Trump's approach to dealing with Iran and North Korea – and explains why his seeming insistence on doubling down has some troubling echoes of another president's decisions. "Trump seems to view international negotiations as he does business deals. He has to win. But there is one big difference. In the international arena, the other person also has to worry about domestic politics. He or she cannot appear to lose either," Fareed says. "For any international negotiation to succeed, there has to be an element of win-win. Otherwise, the other side simply will not be able to sell the deal back home. But Trump seems to believe above all that he must win and the other side must lose." Next, Fareed hosts a live panel to discuss some of the key foreign policy and political developments of the past week. Joining him are David Sanger, national security correspondent for the New York Times, Anne-Marie Slaughter, president and CEO of New America, and Norman Roule, former National Intelligence Manager for Iran at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Also on the show: Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the Communist Party Congress this week with a speech laying out his vision for the country. Joining Fareed to discuss Xi and China's plans are Jiayang Fan, a staff writer for the New Yorker, and Elizabeth Economy, director of Asia studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Plus: Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland has called the U.S. positions on NAFTA negotiations "troubling" and "unconventional." She joins Fareed to discuss the talks, U.S.-Canada economic ties – and why Americans should care about the negotiations. Watch Freeland discuss importance of NAFTA deal for America | |
