The Gardens Behind Monet's Masterpieces
Claude Monet's paintings of water lilies and peonies weren't confined to canvas. In addition to his work as a painter, Monet maintained stunning gardens, the inspiration for his masterpieces. Tragically, after World War II, his gardens were destroyed and left neglected. In the 1970s, Gilbert Vahé along with a team of gardeners brought the landscape back to its former glory, taking cues from Monet's paintings to recreate the scenery.
In 1922, prodigious artist Oskar Schlemmer brought Bauhaus sensibilities to the ballet. He stripped it of tiaras and tutus, and tested the limits of movement by putting his dancers in stiff, sculptural costumes. To call Lukas Novotny an expert horseback rider paints an incomplete picture. Novotny is one of the world's leading horseback archers. Yeah, you read that right: he shoots arrows on horseback. Now, Novotny is almost single-handedly keeping the tradition alive.
