I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and I am proud to call this incredible city home. Sadly though, LA is now facing unprecedented levels of homelessness. As citizens, what can we do to help? Who is making a difference for this community? Many have taken matters into their own hands, including Hattie Mitchell, who has dedicated her life to erasing this problem. By giving every child the chance at an education, by providing them hope, Hattie is giving them a shot at a bright future. Don't we all need someone like Hattie to believe in us? Thank you to Great Big Story for helping me shine a light on such a pressing issue, and for giving people like Hattie a platform to spread their message.

A School to Nurture LA's Homeless Youth
At Crete Academy, in South Central Los Angeles, rockets are made and launched, future chess masters learn their first moves, ballerinas twirl and hope is in high supply. The nonprofit charter school, which serves pre-K to 6th-grade students experiencing extreme poverty and homelessness, takes an integrated approach to education—offering free transportation, three daily meals, mental health services and a robust academic program that allows kids to thrive and dream.
