We can all keep Dr. King's legacy alive

"A little ripple can turn into a big wave." 1/20/19

Inspired by the legacy and dream set forth by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Great Big Story is proud to celebrate Americans walking the walk towards a better future. From moms rallying to end gun violence in Chicago, to librarians on the front lines against opioid addiction, it only takes one person to spark change that affects entire communities.

This Monday, do your part to carry on Dr. King's dream. Take action for your neighborhood—find hundreds of opportunities to give back at Volunteer Match.

Keep fighting, keep dreaming.

Keeping Martin Luther King Jr.'s Dream Alive

For the past 15 years, Stephon Ferguson has been traveling the world reenacting the mighty speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With his uncanny cadence, Ferguson found his calling channeling the voice of Dr. King, making certain the power of his words is never forgotten. As the only person licensed by Dr. King's estate to perform, Ferguson uses his platform as an opportunity to spread King's philosophy of love and nonviolence.

Taking Back the Neighborhood with an Army of Moms

The neighborhood of Englewood on Chicago's South Side is among the most dangerous in the country. There, gun violence is a daily occurrence. But this isn't a story about shootings. This is about a group of mothers who are standing up to the violence with the type of stern love only moms can provide.

Fighting Food Waste in Los Angeles

When Rick Nahmias realized that fresh produce in his community was routinely being tossed out for minor bruising or browning, he knew something needed to be done to end the unnecessary waste. He founded Food Forward, a non-profit dedicated to ending hunger by sharing abundance.

In Denver, Fighting Homelessness at the Library

Cuica Montoya knows first-hand how a drug addiction can turn your life upside down. Cuica sought to give back, to become the person she once needed. She found herself at Denver's Central Public Library, where staff host a peer navigator program, offering a hand and a home to those affected by drugs and homelessness.

A Man, A Van, A Plan

If you see Will Cole driving his van around Albuquerque, say hello—he's doing good work. Will leads the city's There's A Better Way program, which reaches out to the homeless and offers employment for the day at a litter cleanup or city beautification job site.
