"Nearly everyone wants as least one outstanding meal a day." 11/25/17

Playing the World's Largest Flutes

Paige Long is a world-renowned flutist. She's also one of a small number of people who can play the three largest flutes in the flute family: the double subcontrabass, the subcontrabass and the contrabass. With tubing that stretches up to 22 feet in length, these instruments require a strong set of lungs to be able to carry a tune.

Closer to a Cure: Combating Alzheimer's With New Compute Technology

The human brain remains a complex mystery. But, if we dare to dream big—and have the proper tools and data to fuel those ambitions—we may one day discover cures for diseases as devastating as Alzheimer's. In Germany, more than 1,000 neuroscientists are using HPE Memory-Driven Computing architecture to help identify patterns within vast collections of data 100x faster than before. Their work aims to identify biomarkers that can predict the early onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Tracking Down Apples Lost to Time

David Benscoter spent 24 years mastering his skills as an investigator, breaking cases on bank robberies and political corruption for the F.B.I. and the I.R.S. Now, he's taking a bite out of a different kind of problem—lost apples.

Meet the Coffee Virtuoso of Jeju Island

Kim Young Han is a coffee virtuoso, but the former Jeju Island café owner isn't content to simply offer you a cup of mind-blowing java. Han wants to explore the seemingly limitless ways of using coffee plants. His latest endeavor includes a line of natural cosmetics derived from the fruit surrounding coffee beans, which are rich in antioxidants. The goal with this project is to provide the raw ingredients for both inner and outer beauty, and demonstrate yet another way that coffee improves our lives.

Fighting to Keep Mexico's Floating Farms Alive

Before the Aztecs, early Mesoamericans built floating farms that provided fertile land for crops near modern-day Mexico City. But because they are costly to maintain, some local farmers are abandoning these farms, or "chinampas," for better-paying work in the city. That's where Lucio Usobiaga comes in. He's the co-founder of Yolcan, a nonprofit aimed at preserving the chinampas.
