A Coal Mine Stuck in Time
Built during the short economic boom between the two world wars, the Zollverein in Essen, Germany, is a historic industrial coal mine stuck in time. Reconstructed in the 1920s, the Zollverein adopted a Bauhaus style of architecture featuring a modern, symmetrical aesthetic. Today, the mine is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Ring-Tailed Lemur Fights Off Deforestation
On Endangered Species Day, meet Teres—a ring-tailed lemur. He is quite the character. An emblem of Madagascar, these black and white ring-tailed primates are more social than most lemurs, with as many as 24 members in a group. When traveling together, they keep their tails in the air to make sure no one gets lost. But unfortunately, the habitats they call home are being rapidly destroyed.
