The Point: A Wednesday (and week!) to remember

May 18, 2018  by Chris Cillizza and Saba Hamedy

A Wednesday (and week!) to remember

In the space of 24 hours in the middle of this week, a massive amount of news happened.

We got the Senate testimony of Donald Trump Jr. -- and many others -- in regards to the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with several Russians. President Donald Trump filed his financial disclosure report, making clear that he had almost certainly reimbursed his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, for the 2016 hush payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. Rudy Giuliani, the newest and most high-profile member of Trump's legal team, revealed that the special counsel's office had told him they did not believe they could indict a sitting president. Trump himself continued to bash the special counsel investigation, which turned one year old, via Twitter.

There's a tendency in this modern political and media environment to see everything as a mountain -- even the molehills. That goes double (or more) for Donald Trump's presidency.

And yet, even by those standards, the 24 hours between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning stand out. In fact, that 24 hours seems likely to be something we look back on in a week or a month or even a year as truly significant.

It was a day when many of the key chess pieces all moved at once. And we're still trying to figure out what all of those moves mean.

Below, the 28 major headlines of the week from the Trump administration.

SURPRISE!: TRUMP NOMINATES WILKIE FOR VA SECRETARY

It wouldn't be Friday without some big news. CNN's Jeremy DiamondJuana Summers and Allie Malloy report:

"President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is nominating Robert Wilkie to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs, three weeks after his previous nominee withdrew from the confirmation process amid controversy. Wilkie is currently the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness but has been serving as the VA's acting secretary since the President fired VA Secretary David Shulkin in late March. But Trump said the announcement came as a surprise even to Wilkie."

"Trump made the announcement during an unrelated White House event on prison reform and as news coverage of the latest mass shooting in America blanketed the airwaves. He delivered the VA news moments after expressing his 'sadness and heartbreak' over the Santa Fe, Texas, school shooting."

#2020 WATCH

CNN's Caroline Kenny writes: FiveThirtyEight did a fantasy draft of prospective 2020 candidates in their weekly politics chat. There are bunch of interesting takeaways:
  • Sen. Tammy Baldwin is the third overall pick. She has other people on this list coming to stump for her (for example, Sens. Cory Booker and Kamala Harris)
  • Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick is being taken seriously as a second round pick
  • Some out-of-the-blue picks: Sally Yates and Doug Jones.
  • A very "liberal" first couple of picks: Sens. Bernie Sanders, Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren rounded out the top of the list.
  • Some notable names who didn't make the cut: Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Chris Murphy, former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

'WE HAVE TO WIN BACK CONGRESS'

CNN's Dan Merica reports: "Hillary Clinton put the need for Democrats to perform well in the 2018 midterms in no uncertain terms on Friday at the Democratic National Committee Women's Leadership Forum Conference.

"We have to win back the Congress," she said directly. "I'll be there with you every step of the way because we are going to take back the country we love."

Clinton's speech was primarily a call to action to women to donate and work with the DNC, but the 2016 Democratic nominee also took a handful of subtle shots at President Donald Trump. She also knocked Republicans for rejecting facts and science."

FLOTUS HEALTH UPDATE

CNN's Veronica Stracqualursi reports: "President Donald Trump provided an update Friday on first lady Melania Trump, who has remained hospitalized since undergoing a kidney procedure earlier this week.

"'She's doing great. Doing great,' Trump told a reporter after delivering remarks at a prison reform event at the White House.

His remark comes after Mrs. Trump, 48, underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland earlier this week." Read more here.
