"I don't want people to ever forget this history." 9/20/18 Finding Freedom in the Swamp The Great Dismal Swamp is a vast area straddling the border of eastern Virginia and North Carolina. An unforgiving environment, it played an important role in the history of slavery in the United States. For Eric Sheppard, the area holds a personal history. Like many others, his ancestor, Moses Grandy, is believed to have found refuge in the swamp.  A huge thanks to our guest editor this week, Yvonne Orji. Her cartoons,which frequently appear in The New Yorker, explore the absurdity of human life wherever it unfolds—cramped apartments, crowded bars and now, the Pacific Crest Trail. Watercolors in hand and husband by her side, Kendra is documenting the five-and-a-half-month journey, with its epic beauty and inevitable stresses, by sketching. And like his grandfather and father before him, he does so on handmade stilts driven into the sand.
