I think the initial resistance was more emotional and angry than effective, but it is maturing and increasingly promising. I look for lessons from history and from other countries into what upset citizens should do — and here's what I found. Read! | | I disagreed with President George W. Bush on most domestic and foreign issues, but I must add that he hasn't been fully appreciated for the superb work he did on AIDS, malaria and, more recently, cervical cancer. Millions of people are alive today, especially in southern Africa, because his Pepfar program turned the course of the war on AIDS. And bravo to him for this op-ed calling on the United States to stay the course on these global health programs. | | Two of the Pulitzer Prizes I'd especially call your attention to. First, Chris Chivers won for his essay about a U.S. vet of the Afghan war who suffered from PTSD and then was imprisoned for a crime; the article led to his freedom, and you can read it here. Second, Matthew Desmond won for his extraordinary book "Evicted," which is a critical book to understanding poverty and inequality in the United States. I strongly recommend it.
