What the White House Press Corps is Talking About: The shooting at a congressional baseball team practice, of course. Today is Cancelled: The event at the Department of Labor scheduled for this afternoon, with the President and Ivanka Trump and Secretary Acosta, has been cancelled. Vice President Mike Pence this morning cancelled his speech to the National Association of Homebuilders, and remained at the White House. The House, following a noon briefing and a prayer on the floor during which members held hands, adjourned early. But, THE GAME IS ON: One thing not cancelled: the Congressional Baseball Game. According to those present at the House briefing, a cheer went up and there was applause when it was announced the annual game would go on at Nationals Park as planned Thursday night. Since its inception in 1909, the Congressional Baseball Game has been one of the most beloved — and bipartisan — events in Washington. The game is expected to raise $600,000+ for local charities. Congressman Scalise is a friend, and a very good friend. He's a patriot and he's a fighter. He will recover from this assault and, Steve, I want you to know that you have the prayers not only of the entire city behind you, but of an entire nation and, frankly, the entire world. America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this terrible shooting. I spoke with Steve's wife, Jennifer, and I pledged to her our full and absolute support. Anything she needs. We are with her and with the entire Scalise family." Read his full remarks here. But here is the statement from Senator Sanders. | | Eric Trump, SMDH: While First Lady Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump both tweeted thoughts and prayers for today's shooting victims, along with thanks to the first responders, Eric Trump had something else on his mind. He sent this at 9:15 this morning, as the tragedy in Alexandria was still unfolding and the medical status of the victims was unclear. He flagged, wait for it ... #401ks. | | Image credit: @erictrump/twitter An hour or so later, he retweeted a tweet from his father wishing Rep. Steve Scalise a full recovery. Also, HBD POTUS!: Today is President Trump's 71st birthday. I hear the family still plans to celebrate as originally scheduled, with a private (and low-key) party in the Executive Residence. | | | | | |
