Later, he and the first lady go to the East Room to officially announce the nomination of Kirstjen Nielsen as secretary of Homeland Security. What the White House Press Corps is Talking About: Frustration surrounding Trump's repeated tweets about the media, as well as his statements on Hannity last night, that the press is making up their stories. I would suggest reading Brian Stelter's Reliable Sources email from last night -- it explains all the angles and links to some smart stories on this whole thing. Today's briefing with Sarah Sanders is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wait, Now We Might Not Help Puerto Rico?: The President suggested in tweets that he might not be able to approve Puerto Rico recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria for much longer. Um, even though Vice President Pence last week in Puerto Rico told the citizens there that the government "will be with you every step of the way" until the island is back on its feet. | | Credit: @realDonaldTrump/Twitter Today, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders clarified the FEMA situation with this statement: "Our job in any disaster affected location is to help the community respond and recover from that disaster. We continue to do so with the full force of the US government and its resources in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands and other affected areas. Successful recoveries do not last forever; they should be as swift as possible to help people resume their normal lives. We are committed to helping Puerto Rico. Our Administration is working with Governor Rossello and Congress to identify the best fiscally responsible path forward." Mark Twain Prize is Going to be Lit: David Letterman is this year's awardee of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, which will be celebrated at the Kennedy Center on October 22. The lineup was announced this morning and the entertainers have, for the most part, been pretty vocal about their politics. Sen. Al Franken, Jimmy Kimmel, Norm Macdonald, Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Amy Schumer, and Martin Short are scheduled to appear. Cosmo Tells Girls How to Run for Office: The lady mag is ditching dating and sex tips this week in favor of a huge feature on how to run for office -- complete with requisite blogger gold-balloon letter paraphernalia. There are 15 stories on advice, maps, stats, and first-person accounts from female politicians. Worth a look ... | | Credit: cosmopolitan.com Ivana Trump's Book Might Be a Masterpiece: I am about halfway through "Raising Trump," the new book by the President's first ex-wife, Ivana Trump, and it's a hoot. I highly suggest giving it a peek. But, if you don't, my colleague Betsy Klein yesterday wrote a masterpiece of her own: Take a look at 23 Times Ivana Trump stirs the pot in her new memoir. My favorites are #'s 19 and 22, when she talks about trying to order chablis at a Taco Bell, and that Ivanka Trump must really love Jared Kushner if she "was willing to give up lobster and bacon" to marry him. Dress Like the First Lady: I'm sort of obsessed with this new thing the first lady's office is doing by creating very well-produced video stories of her day/activities, and then setting them to music for a mini-movie. Here's one from yesterday when Melania visited with Sophie Gregoire Trudeau -- strong on the violins. But, back to the clothes. The first lady wore a sharp, tailored gray suit, with a white shirt and a thin black scarf-tie situation. Was it unique? The suit jacket was this one, the Parker in Chalk Stripe from Ralph Lauren Collection, for $1,690. | | | Credit: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images, ralphlauren.com | | What Washington is Talking About: The House will vote on a disaster relief bill today that stood at $36.5 billion as of Wednesday afternoon for areas hit by hurricanes and wildfires. What America is Talking About: The Boy Scouts of America's announcement Wednesday that girls can join in the Cub Scout program and earn the rank of Eagle Scout, BSA's highest award. The Girl Scouts of America clapped back in a statement, saying, "only Girl Scouts has the expertise to give girls and young women the tools they need for success." Poll of the Day: A Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday had two interesting data points about the anthem protests. It found 58% of Americans believe President Trump's comments on the protest were not appropriate, but 52% also disapproved of athletes kneeling during the anthem. Rich Lowry had a smart line about this in his piece for Politico magazine: "If you're Donald Trump and at 40 percent or below in the polls ... a 50/50 issue works for you. If you are the NFL and hope to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, a 50/50 issue is a disaster for you." Clinton "Appalled" by Weinstein Allegations: Hillary Clinton spoke with our Fareed Zakaria for her first on-camera interview since the stories about allegations against Harvey Weinstein broke and said she was "shocked" and "appalled." She said she wasn't able to give back money he donated to her, but that she would donate to charity: "What other people are saying, what my former colleagues are saying, is they're going to donate it to charity, and of course I will do that. I give 10% of my income to charity every year, this will be part of that. There's no -- there's no doubt about it." | | Credit: CNN Charlottesville's Trying to Block White Supremacists From Returning: The city and a group of business owners filed a lawsuit this morning against white nationalist organizations, "Unite the Right" rally leaders and others to prevent them from coming to town, citing Virginia state laws that prohibit "unlawful paramilitary activity." As mentioned in Monday's issue of COVER/LINE, when a group of white supremacists was there this weekend to march to a statue of Robert E. Lee, they said they would return. Turns Out The Russian Facebook Ads Will be Released: The word from both Facebook and lawmakers has been that the ads shared by Russia-connected Facebook pages wouldn't be made public, but that's now been reversed after Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg met with House Russia investigation members Wednesday. Rep. Adam Schiff said the ads would be released by the committee and that it was unlikely they'd come out before the public hearing with Facebook, Google and Twitter on November 1. Pinterest Wasn't Spared From Russia-Connected Posts: Russian operatives don't appear to have used Pinterest themselves, but images they posted on other social networks turned up there, pinned unwittingly by users. "We believe the fake Facebook content was so sophisticated that it tricked real Americans into saving it to Pinterest," Charlie Hale, Pinterest head of public policy told The Washington Post. Is nothing sacred?! You just want to scroll through recipes and home design ideas but then BLAM, you're hit with a photo of a man in a cowboy hat that asks you to "like or share" if you want to stop the Islamic Invasion of Texas (that was an actual post). Mary Kay Huntsman Talks Moving to Russia: Jon Huntsman Jr.'s wife talked to KSL in Salt Lake City and said he took the job as US ambassador to Russia because their seven kids -- "our two boys in the Navy particularly" -- all said "do it." They'll move to Moscow with daughters Asha, 11, who'll attend the Anglo-American School of Moscow, and Gracie, 18, who has been admitted to the University of Pennsylvania but will take a gap year. She said she expects the job is "not going to be easy ... This is not a role that's just a cakewalk." Britney Returns: Britney Spears and her dancers wore black "#VegasStrong" baseball hats during last night's show there, her first since the shooting. In an Instagram post last week, Spears wrote, "We'll get through this together." | | Credit: @popqueenbritney/Instagram Trump Still Hasn't Tweeted About Eminem: The rapper's anti-Trump freestyle rap was played multiple times throughout the day across cable news, but Trump's so far been silent. He also still hasn't tweeted about Jimmy Kimmel.
