What the White House Is Talking About:
Today's trip to Las Vegas. President Donald Trump and the first lady are set to visit with first responders and victims of this week's horrific mass shooting. They're going to stop at University Medical Center and then convene with police, families and survivors. They return to the White House later tonight. Follow here for live updates of the trip.

What the White House Press Corps Is Talking About:
Trump's Vegas trip, and how it will measure up to Tuesday's visit to Puerto Rico

Rex Tillerson Wades In:
During a hastily called press conference this morning from the State Department, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson tried to shut down rumors he was considering resigning from his post (he said he has "never" thought about leaving), or that he was not operating under the guidelines and philosophies initiated by Trump. ("He's smart.") Asked whether he called the President a "moron," as reported in an explosive NBC News story this morning, Tillerson would only say he wasn't going to engage in "petty nonsense." "I'm just not going to be part of the efforts to divide this administration," he said.

Tillerson Story Prompts Tweet:
Whatever Tillerson said today, it's clear the NBC story got under Trump's skin. This morning he tweeted about it being fake news, worse(!) than CNN in terms of legitimacy in his eyes. The tweet went out shortly after White House social media director Dan Scavino posted, and deleted, the same exact one.

Shortly after Tillerson's  statement, Trump tweeted again, saying NBC News should issue an apology to AMERICA! (all caps included.)

The Russian-Connected Facebook Ads Plot Thickens:
On Tuesday night CNN's Manu Raju, Dylan Byers and Dana Bash broke the news that the Russian-linked Facebook ads specifically targeted Michigan and Wisconsin. Those two states had some of the closest margins of wins for Trump -- he won by about 10,700 votes in Michigan, and about 22,700 in Wisconsin. Facebook has confirmed that Russian-linked entities bought 3,000 ads, and that those ads reached 10 million people. The ability of Facebook ads to target specific geographic regions and/or groups of people and how that could, or did, affect election results, remains an ongoing discussion

Our Daily Melania:
The first lady once again accompanies the President to bring comfort after a national emergency, but a source involved in the planning of the first couple's trip to Las Vegas tells me she wanted to do more. Melania Trump had hoped to donate blood during her visit, something countless people have been doing after Sunday night's shooting. Vice President Mike Pence did it Tuesday. However, presidential medical guidelines, and a recommendation from the physician to the president, thwarted those plans. Still, look for Melania Trump today to gravitate toward the families of the victims and first responders. While the President's words about Puerto Rico and the storm and recovery efforts were a bit controversial, on Tuesday night the first lady released a statement saying her time with the hurricane victims was inspiring. "The resilience and determination of the people I met today will outlast any damage that was left behind," she said.
Obama Shares His Love Via Video:
Michelle Obama was appearing Tuesday with TV show creator and producer Shonda Rhimes at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women when there was a "surprise" video interruption from her husband, Barack Obama. Obama said he was sorry to crash the party, but he had to tell his wife how much he loved her on their 25th wedding anniversary. "The idea that you would even put up with me for a quarter of a century is a remarkable testament to what a saintly, wonderful, patient person you are,'' he said.

"I better get home!" Michelle Obama said when the video was over -- and she did. Later the couple was spotted having dinner at Fiola restaurant, where they've dined before. The Obamas also like Fiola's sister restaurant, Fiola Mare, which is where the former President ate his birthday dinner last year. I'm sure all of the bold-facers who eat at the Fabio Trabocchi restaurants had something to do with Maria Trabocchi, the chef's wife and co-owner of the fine-dining establishments, making Washingtonian's new Most Powerful Women in Washington list
Ivanka on US Weekly:
The first daughter has a softball cover story in the next issue of US Weekly magazine, where she talks about living in Washington (picnics! museums!), and working at the White House (goose bumps!). She did the interview as part of the rollout of new White House STEM education initiatives. Note: Ivanka Trump went with her green-colored contact lenses for the cover shot.

What Washington Is Talking About:
The press conference by Sens. Richard Burr and Mark Warner of the Senate Intelligence Committee on their investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Said Burr, "The issue of collusion is still open."

What America Is Talking About:
New details from the Las Vegas shooting. Police say gunfire lasted for about 10 minutes, they recovered 47 firearms from the gunman's hotel room and Nevada homes, and the gunman's girlfriend is a "person of interest." The gunman's motive is still unknown.

Poll of the Day:
Republicans' optimism for the future of their party is down since December, from 79% to 59%, according to Pew. Democrats' optimism about their party is slightly up in the same time frame.

Jason Aldean Cancels Shows:
Aldean announced Tuesday he's canceling three upcoming California shows "out of respect for the victims, their families and our fans." He'll return October 12 for a show in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Jennifer Lopez also canceled shows from her Las Vegas residency this week.

Disney Head Weighs In on Las Vegas:
Bob Iger, chairman and the CEO of the Walt Disney Co., said at an event hosted by Vanity Fair that three Disney employees were among those killed or wounded in Las Vegas. "We should be demanding a dialogue about this from our politicians," he said. Iger also said he was involved in the decision not to fire ESPN host Jemele Hill after her criticism of Trump. When asked whether he'd considered running for president, Iger said, "Let's not go there."

Michigan and Wisconsin Were Two of the Swingiest Swing States in 2016:
Kate mentioned the latest revelation of how Russia-connected Facebook ads targeted Michigan and Wisconsin. Here's why that could be important: They are two of six states decided in 2016 by margins of less than 2%, both were won by Obama twice, and neither has voted for a Republican for president since the '80s. Both were won by Trump. After the election, The Washington Post broke down states with dots representing 1,000 voters. Here are the representations for Michigan and Wisconsin and how many votes they were decided by, to give you a visual.

Facebook's Full-Page Ad in Washington Post:
It can micro-target people based on their gender, age, city residence, place of employment and interests, but Facebook today took the old-school route and bought a newspaper ad. It basically reiterates what Mark Zuckerberg has already said about what Facebook plans to do to prevent election interference in the future.

Congressman Asked Woman to Get an Abortion, Per Texts:
Rep. Tim Murphy, an anti-abortion Pennsylvania Republican, wanted a woman he was having an extra-marital affair with to get an abortion, according to text messages in documents obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The woman called him out for posting an anti-abortion post on Facebook and in a text from Murphy's phone number, he said his staff wrote it.

Why The Boss Won't Write Anti-Trump Music:
In an interview with Variety, Bruce Springsteen said his next record wouldn't be an "anti-Trump diatribe" because "it's everywhere and all over, ya know? It feels a little redundant to me at the moment." He also said he still believes Hillary Clinton, whom he campaigned for, would have made "an excellent president." When asked if he'd considered running for governor of New Jersey, he said, "Pssht, nooo. I would have no business in politics."

The RBG Workout:
In case you've plateaued on getting the Paul Ryan physique through P90X DVDs or in toning you arms like Michelle Obama at [solidcore], now you can try out Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg "supremely good exercise program" in a book by court clerk and RBG trainer Bryant Johnson. It's out in two weeks, for $10.52. It's a lot of resistance band work, per excerpts published in Glamour.
