What the White House is Talking About:
The shooting in Las Vegas. The White House has lowered flags to half-staff.

What the White House Press Corps is Talking About:
The shooting in Las Vegas and the President's just-announced Wednesday trip there to visit with victims and first responders.

Trump Addresses the Nation:
The President took to a podium in the Diplomatic Room at the White House earlier this morning to address the nation in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in the country's modern history, calling it "an act of pure evil." His message was one of unity, and he also praised the swift actions of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for identifying where the shots were coming from and moving in quickly in an effort to save lives. "The speed in which they acted was miraculous," said Trump. "It shows what true professionalism is all about." Clearly Trump was moved by the heroism of the police and first responders.

Reaching Out to Las Vegas:
The City of Las Vegas Twitter account posted a video of Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman holding out her cell phone, on speaker, to Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo so both could listen to the President on the phone as he called to say he was proud of law enforcement actions.

Melania Trump Heading to Vegas, Too:
The first lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham confirmed to me that Melania Trump is going to join the President on his visit to Las Vegas on Wednesday. She'll also be with him in Puerto Rico on Tuesday when they fly to the island to survey damage from Hurricane Maria.

Additionally, the first lady last night carried on a tradition started by President George W. Bush almost a decade ago when she announced via a statement that the White House would be lit up in pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She posted a shot of what the pink lights looked like from inside the second floor residence of the White House, an angle the public rarely gets to see.

I'm Struggling Today:
Going to be honest with you, I'm having a tough time today. As some of you might know, I lived in Las Vegas for almost 11 years. It's where I started my career, where I got married (at the Four Seasons, which is located inside Mandalay Bay), and where my daughter was born, 12 years ago. I still have tons of close friends there, many of them journalists. Today my Facebook feed is filled with people checking in as safe, and my personal cell phone, still my Vegas number seven years later, is blowing up with calls and texts. So far, I know three people who were shot. I spoke with my best friend from Vegas, whose husband is a doctor. She said he described the emergency room at University Medical Center, where he worked through the night, and where many victims were transported since it's the only Level I Trauma Center in Nevada, as "a war zone." I can't quite wrap my head around it, and what it means for a city I really love, and this country. But it makes me sad. Sadder than I've been in a long time. Going to let Hunter take it from here.

What Washington is Talking About:
The Supreme Court is back in session today, and on the schedule are cases about immigration and gerrymandering. Facebook is expected to hand over 3,000 Russian-bought ads to Congress. And Speaker Ryan ordered flags at the Capitol today to be flown at half-staff in response to the Las Vegas shooting.

What America is Talking About:
More than 50 have been killed and hundreds injured In a shooting at a Las Vegas county music festival. The suspect, a 64-year-old Nevada man, is dead. Shots were fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel across Las Vegas Boulevard from where the festival was taking place. It is the deadliest shooting in modern US history.

How Jason Aldean Responded:
It breaks my heart that yet another musician this year has to put out a statement about an attack that occurred during their show. Jason Aldean was performing during the shooting and ran off stage. He posted this photo and Instagram, writing, "Tonight has been beyond horrific. I still dont know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe. My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. #heartbroken#stopthehate"

Hillary Clinton tweeted this morning a call to oppose easing restrictions on silencers.

She followed that tweet up with another, writing, "Our grief isn't enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again."

A hearing on a bill that would make it easier to purchase silencers was scheduled for the day of the congressional baseball practice shooting but was canceled.

The Las Vegas native tweeted his condolences this morning.

Update from Puerto Rico:
It's been almost two weeks since Puerto Rico was struck by Hurricane Maria and officials say still only 5% of the island has electricity. A FEMA official said as of Sunday 1 million liters of water and 1 million meals had been delivered.

Facebook Announces Changes to Ads:
As part of their attempt to make ads on the site more transparent as the Russia story continues to unfold, Facebook announced today it will ask advertisers for candidates to confirm who they represent and is adding 1,000 people to its ad-review teams.

Reminder:
Today's not a typical first weekday of the month, but I still wanted to remind you that rent is due.
