His section will return Friday. | | What the White House is Talking About: President Trump today hosts a roundtable discussion about MS-13 gang activity. Later he signs a National Security Presidential Memorandum, which establishes a national vetting center. What the White House Press Corps is Talking About: The White House briefing returns today, scheduled for 3:15 p.m. with Sarah Sanders. Oh, also, we're on shutdown watch again. Release the Memo, Part Two: The House Intelligence Committee has voted unanimously to release the Democratic memo that's a rebuttal to the GOP memo released by Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes. Basically, the Democrats are like, that other memo isn't correct, so this one will fix the incorrect parts, and the Republicans are like, ok, release your memo and then we'll let the people decide which one they prefer. And the President is like, all right, I'll most likely go ahead and approve the release of another classified memo. Immigration Restrictions: If that "national vetting center" thing gave you pause, here's more about it. Somewhat related, Trump today tweeted about the tragic death of Colts player Edwin Jackson. | | Credit: @realDonaldTrump/Twitter John Kelly Says Some Dreamers Were "Too Lazy to Get Off Their Asses": This is what the White House chief of staff said today describing those eligible Dreamers who didn't sign up for DACA when they could have. That, or they were "too afraid." If you don't believe me, listen to him -- the Washington Post caught Kelly on audio. "Cadet Bone Spurs": Sen. Tammy Duckworth wins the fire comment of the week so far with her nickname for Trump. Duckworth is of course referring to Trump's draft deferments during the Vietnam War -- of which he had five, one being he couldn't go to war because of bone spurs. The senator, a veteran who lost both legs during her service in Iraq, was responding to Trump's comments yesterday in Ohio that he thought Democrats were "treasonous" because they didn't stand and applaud during his State of the Union Address, even for "the good parts." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Stock Market Frenzy: We're watching it live today, so if you are concerned about where things are headed after yesterday's dramatic decline, keep up here. | | Our Daily Melania: Yesterday, Melania Trump went to Cincinnati with the President, but when they landed, she split off and went to Cincinnati Children's Hospital. I went with her. It was a quick visit, about an hour or so, but she managed three different stops: a meeting with a hospital administrator to learn about the effects of opioid addiction in infants born with withdrawal symptoms, a quick chat with a family whose son has a rare disorder that forces him to spend long periods of time at the hospital, and a play area with a larger group of sick kids, to chat with them and do some arts and crafts. Then it was back in the motorcade and back to the airport to meet up with POTUS for the ride on Air Force One back to Washington. Here are some candids I got of her -- including just after that adorable little blond girl reached for Melania and climbed into her arms. Also, on the right, this is the inside of the Valentine's Day card her aides passed out to the children. I kind of love the simple, single red heart. | | Credit: Kate Bennett Ivanka Trump Headed to Olympics: My colleague Betsy Klein got this scoop yesterday: Ivanka Trump will lead the US delegation to South Korea for the Olympics' Closing Ceremony. She'll also attend a few of the sporting events before the close. Fun fact: like her mother, Ivana Trump, who was a champion skier for her native Czechoslovakia decades ago, Ivanka is an avid skier. Gossip Girl: I know the Washington Post's Emily Heil pretty well because our Washington lifestyle coverage means we're frequently at the same events, noting similar nuances of the DC social scene. It's often good times with Emily -- she's another one who knows a lot more than she's allowed to let on, and that tends to bond us gossip-writer types. She has a fun Q&A in the February issue of Washington Life; I'm thrilled she's getting her due, and that she's had the courage to abandon high heels for sneakers at parties. Also, great pic: | | Credit: washingtonlife.com Dress Like the First Lady: How great was that yellow coat yesterday? If you think I should be doing visual inventory of all of Melania Trump's coats, don't worry, I am. The yellow look was new, but the skirt, a custom leather number by designer (and Melania's personal stylist) Hervé Pierre, had been worn before, same with the leopard print Manolo Blahniks, found here. The coat and matching turtleneck are Ralph Lauren Collection. Sorry, gang, the coat's sold out. Here's Melania wearing it yesterday, and how it was shown on the Fall 2017 runway. | | Credit: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images, ralphlauren.com | | | | | |
