On Today's Show

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN:

First, Fareed gives his take on China's Maoist turn under President Xi Jinping.

While Americans tend to see it as a monolith, China is "a vast, complex society, going through great transformation," Fareed says. "Xi is trying to hold it together and maintain control over a dynamic society—without provoking a backlash."

China's show of military strength and party loyalty during its 70th anniversary parade may have only obscured underlying weakness, as countries that allow government criticism may be more resilient in the long run, Fareed suggests.

Next, GPS will feature a conversation with two former US secretaries of state, Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright, whom Fareed interviewed at an event in New Albany, Ohio during the week. The two spoke with Fareed about impeachment and President Trump's Ukraine scandal, US politics in the Trump era, Russian strategy under President Vladimir Putin, and more.

Author and Washington Post columnist Anne Applebaum then looks at the scandal from Ukraine's viewpoint—and explains why it's about American, not Ukrainian, corruption.

Our What in the World segment will examine the GM strike, declining unionization rates in the US, and what the future may hold for labor. Finally, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong provides a view of US-China tensions from a country that could be caught in the middle, telling Fareed how he expects Asian countries to react if they're forced to choose sides.
