Poll of the Day: Today marks one year since Donald Trump was elected president of the United States. His approval rating stands at 36%, the lowest of any president at this point in his presidency, going back to Eisenhower. | | Credit: CNN President Trump is most liked by white men aged 50 and older, but even a majority in that group holds a disapproving view of him. | | Credit: CNN 2017 Election Results: Dems Phil Murphy and Ralph Northam won gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, respectively. Bill de Blasio, another Democrat, won re-election as the mayor of New York City. Provo, Utah, Mayor John Curtis, a Republican, won Utah's 3rd District seat vacated earlier this year by Jason Chaffetz. In a race for Virginia's House of Delegates, Danica Roem, a Democrat, defeated an incumbent who once sponsored a transgender bathroom bill. She's the first openly transgender candidate to be elected to and serve in a state legislature. Former VP Joe Biden called the night's results a "resounding defeat" of Trump and a rejection of "ugly politics" in favor of "candidates who united and inspire us." Trump blamed Virginia Repub Ed Gillespie's loss on Gillespie for not embracing the President and what he stands for. And Speaker Paul Ryan said this morning, the results put "more pressure on us to follow through" on tax reform. Trump's First 280-Character-Era Tweet: Twitter announced Tuesday the new 280-character limit was going Twitter-wide, and Trump sent his first expanded tweet at 8 p.m. ET. He tweeted he was getting ready to speak before the South Korean National Assembly, and then the leader of the free world called the Chinese President's recent consolidation of power a "great political victory." It clocked in at 216 characters. | | Credit: @realDonaldTrump/Twitter Trump Warns North Korea He's Willing to go to War: In his speech before the South Korean National Assembly, Trump detailed "the horror of life" in North Korea, describing it as "a country ruled as a cult," and he threatened war if North Korea tests the US. He said: "The regime has interpreted America's past restraint as weakness. This would be a fatal miscalculation. This is a very different administration than the United States has had in the past. Today I hope I speak not only for our countries, but for all civilized nations when I say to the North: Do not underestimate us. And do not try us. ... America does not seek conflict or confrontation. But we will never run from it. History is filled with discarded regimes that have foolishly tested America's resolve." | | Credit: Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images Trump's Surprise DMZ Visit Foiled by Weather: After the White House said last week that Trump would not visit the demilitarized zone, calling it a "cliché," Trump attempted to make a surprise visit there. His helicopter was in the air for about 25 minutes before it returned to the US Army garrison in Seoul due to weather, per the pool report. Officials waited to see if conditions would change so Trump could try again, but gave up after about an hour and the motorcade left. Now Onto China: The Trumps, and Kate, are now in China. On the agenda: a welcome ceremony with Chinese President Xi Jinping, meetings, a joint press statement, and a State Dinner. These were some of my favorites: Topic has a short video series juxtaposing Clinton and Trump supporters telling what their night was like. GQ's Ben Schreckinger wrote an oral history of what it was like inside Trump's war room. Esquire editors pieced together the story of the night talking to people in media and politics. And CNN's Gregory Krieg talked with CNN reporters and producers about what they saw and heard on the campaign trail and at election night parties one year ago today. Hillary Clinton, Teen Vogue Editor: The 2016 Democratic nominee will guest edit a special edition of the magazine, which announced Monday it's cutting its print product down from nine issues a year to four. Here's the cover: | | Credit: @TeenVogue/Twitter Omarosa Reportedly Brought 39-Person Bridal Party to the White House: That's according to Politico, which reported Omarosa Manigault caught some White House and security officials by surprise when she brought her bridal party for "an extended wedding photo shoot" back in April. The pics never saw the light of day, because she was prohibited from posting them online for security and ethical reasons. Reporting for Jury Duty: Former President Obama arrived for jury duty this morning in Chicago and shook hands with people there. Disney Lifts LAT Ban: The company said Tuesday it was ending its ban on press screenings for the Los Angeles Times that came after the paper published thoroughly reported stories about Disneyland's political and financial interests in Anaheim, California. Disney faced counter-bans from the New York Times and A.V. Club, which said they wouldn't cover Disney unless the LAT ban was lifted. Super excited to go read a bunch of Thor reviews now. The Trailer for "The Post" Gives Me First Amendment Feels: Meryl Streep as Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee. You can watch it here.
