Carrying On the Blacksmith's Torch
At 30-years-old, Yu Kikuchi was tired of his job. Working in an assembly line that made turbines, he was aching to find a new lease on life. So when he heard about 80-year-old master blacksmith Kosaku Matsumura who made "nata," or Japanese hatchets, he knew he had found his calling.
In 2013, a federal law retired all chimpanzees at the National Institutes of Health from lab testing. Chimp Haven was founded to respond to the need for long-term chimpanzee care. Located on 200 acres of forested land near Shreveport, La., the sanctuary is home to more than 200 chimps who get to roam free and spend their days as it suits them.
